Some Say Looters Don’t Read

Let no one come and tell me _looters don’t read and readers don’t loot_ looters read and readers loot, a perfect example is our leaders in every institution of the Nigerian life be it family, educational, religious or political institutions. They all are looters. That’s why the system became so bad. Weren’t they the ones who read us texts as a way of educating us?

The reason bookshops were not looted is poverty. The people are so poverty stricken that they only care about whatever brings them instant gratification. So tell me why they would have looted bookshops? They wouldn’t have sold the books to make money, they wouldn’t have eaten them either. They also do not expect a miracle to happen by reading the books. After all what miracle has happened with the ones they (or their kind) have earlier read? Nothing.

People have been sucked into a rat race by poverty created by the leaders. So what most people think about is how to survive through the day.

You think the louts who were collecting money on the road in the guise of #EndSARS protest don’t know it’s wrong? They do but they see it as a means that gets them through the day when they allow tomorrow take care of itself.

People become shortsighted when they are poverty stricken. The solution to many of the looting is not arrests, it is for the leaders to take away their hound of hardships they have let loose on us.

A man who is satisfied with his life does not loot covid19 palliatives (there wouldn’t be anything to loot if everything was right) or other people’s businesses. In places where things work well, people tell you they retire from their private jobs but here in Nigeria, people work to their deathbed in public/civil service with constant reduction of age to keep them there.

Nigeria has enough resources to keep poverty out of this land forever but we have thieves, looters as leaders and they are insensitive to the plight of the masses.

CoViD-19: The future of work as I see it

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus, a major topic f interest among the workforce is job losses. While it is not a new topic , the outbreak of covid-19, which forces people to maintain physical distancing, makes people stay in their homes (willingly or otherwise) to check its spread, has brought about a significance increase in the use of machines of varying complexities which replace humans in their works. Online shops now offer drone delivery of goods, Rwanda now uses robots to test patients for the Virus and that is how far automation has gone in the labour market.

It does not require rocket science to know that this tradition will mot omly continue but it will become the new normal and it would be improved upon after the pandemic. Thus, there will be a reduced need for human resources in the workforce. Fret not however, machine cannot totally take over human functions. For one to be relevant, they have to fortify themselves with soft skills. Skills that can never be effectively automated. You are going to be relevant still only if you take deliberate actions towards it. Only if you truly learn the real lessons from the pandemic.

Increasing calls for reduced human contact -physical distancing- has introduced lockdown. A situation imposed by the government of a state upon the citizens in order to properly contain the virus. A situation being managed by workplaces to various degrees and in various manners. Some establishment are totally closed, some are partially closed. While some workplaces practise phased openings, some practice work space sharing. Other establishments, including governments (ministries), have directed their employees to work from home. Several job functions do not necessarily have to be done at the office, they can be carried out from home or anywhere else. Many of the jobs are not location specific. We are just living that reality now-thanks to CoVid-19. Facebook Inc., the company that owns four major social networking and instant messaging applications, projects that by 2050, half of its total staff strength will be working remotely. “It’s clear that Covid has changed a lot about our lives, and that certainly includes the way that most of us work,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “Coming out of this period, I expect that remote work is going to be a growing trend as well.”

Facebook’s announcement followed similar decisions at Jack Dorsey’s Twitter and the payments company Square. Mr. Dorsey said last week that employees at his companies would be allowed to work from home indefinitely. Google employees have been told they can work from home through the end of the year, but the company has not made any indications about permanent plans.

Staff members can decide to work from another city thus reducing the costs of transportation and accommodation on the path of the employee. It also brings about a reduction in the cost of office space to be acquired by the employers and reduced population density in commercial cities like San Francisco, California where we have Silicon Valley and Lagos, Nigeria.

Also, Fortunately, our progressive society is gradually shifting their emphasis away from enforcing a dress code towards a more liberal and employee-oriented dress policy. Allowing employees to wear casual attire can have a more positive effect on their overall productivity and workplace morale than you thought. Read more about it here

Workspace sharing is another way to go. Essential workers like medics, the police etc. are naturally used to this practice even before the pandemic. It has become evident that not everyone’s job requires them to work (in a specific location) from 9 to 5. an employee can come to work in the morning while another uses the same workspace in the evening. This helps to reduce the cost of setting up your company.

Covid-19: my deal so far

Individuals and corporate bodies have donated billions of Naira towards the collective fight against the #Coronavirus pandemic. I am still on my way towards earning my first #Million (let alone billion). This has, however, not hindered me from playing my part in the struggle. For about two months now, I have been donating my time, wit, soft skills and other resources towards the fight. I am not doing this alone, I work with the KnowCovid19 Nigeria team.

My opinion on issues (relating to CoViD-19) have been better informed due to fact finding and personal analysis of trends and associations. I also think more, now, of the effects of these trends in social and economic developments.

KnowCovid19 Nigeria is a team of young vibrant Nigerians which saddles itself with the responsibility of dispelling fake news, establishing facts and analysing trends about the #Coronavirus Pandemic in Nigeria. We are spending what we have as our own contribution to the cause. We would appreciate supports in whatever forms possible however (thank you in advance).

The opportunity that the KnowCovid-19 Nigeria group offers me to put my little ability to use in fighting the Coronavirus pandemic, the knowledge that I’m being a piece (however tiny) of the solution puzzle is a soothing motivation.

Volunteering always comes with its perks. One word for my experience in the KnowCovid-19 Nigeria group is Growth! My knowledge of data mining may not be on top level, interestingly, it has improved. I have had to read and ask questions on how to gather data on a topic of interest. I am learning the use of some tools (methods, softwares etc.) for research and updating my knowledge of the ones I used to know.

My opinion on issues (relating to CoViD-19) have been better informed due to fact finding and personal analysis of trends and associations. I also think more, now, of the effects of these trends in social and economic developments.

Being in KnowCovid-19 Nigeria has improved my general knowledge about the world and has increased my interest in learning more. I have been accepted into a Research and Evaluation course. It is certain that my experience here will be helpful towards my success in the course.

I will tell you more of my deal, probably, I would make it a series (Covid19 series, lolz) because we never can tell when miss Rona is going to leave us. Don’t hesitate to let me know what you think.
